Children under the age of 19 were involved in the war. The eldest son and the father were forced to become part of the war to help their country while the other children had volunteered to become musicians and soldiers. One child by the name of Charles King was a talented musician and was willing to join the war. He convinced his family that it was safe and enlisted in the Civil War. During the battle on Sept. 17, 1862 artillery from the enemy had exploded near Charles wounding him. A few days later he had died of his wounds. While children had died in the war others were home bound to take care of their families helping their mothers. Some of their responsibilities, as children, were to tend the livestock and farms, serve as clerks and servants for their mothers, and take care of younger siblings while still trying to attend school.
